We know that it’s hard to think clearly or know who to turn to after a car accident. Follow our guide below:

Contact the Police immediately

The first step, if you’re able to, is to call the police. California law requires that you stop, call the police, and have the police complete a police report.

Call for Help
If the accident resulted in an injury, be safe and call an ambulance. A 911 operator will dispatch an ambulance and police team to the scene. DO NOT attempt to treat the injured person yourself unless you have training in first aid. DO NOT try and move an injured person unless they are in a life threatening situation. You may make the injury worse by moving the person.

Exchange Information
You are required to exchange your name, address, and insurance information with the other driver involved in the accident. Ask to see the driver’s license, registration, and insurance card. Copy down all information and put it in a safe place. When the police arrives, copy down the name, badge number, and precinct of the officer so that your attorney can get a copy of the police report.

Make No Statement about the accident
Protect yourself—let your attorney handle the case. Exchange information with the other driver, but do not make any statements, engage in arguments, or say anything that can be used against you in the future.

Witnesses to the car accident
Attempt to get the name, address and phone number of any witness to the car accident.

Medical Treatment
Get prompt medical treatment at an emergency hospital or medical clinic. Make sure you tell the doctor about any complaints and injuries you have as a result of the accident. Remember that some internal injuries may not show up immediately.

Notify Your auto Insurance company
Whenever you are in an accident involving an injury or property damage, notify your insurance company. If you fail to notify your insurance company IMMEDIATELY after the accident, they have the right to refuse to cover the claim.
